The Advanced Reflective Training (ART) Programme is a globally recognized initiative hosted by The DHAN Academy, under the leadership of DHAN Foundation, India. It is designed to cultivate deep, practical, and policy-level expertise in mutual insurance — a sustainable, community-driven solution for managing risks among vulnerable populations.
The ART Programme addresses a critical yet often overlooked dimension of development: risk management for the poor. Traditional insurance models often exclude low-income communities due to high costs, trust deficits, limited outreach, and ill-suited products. Consequently, millions remain vulnerable to health shocks, livelihood disruptions, climate risks, and financial insecurity.
By advancing the concept of mutuality — built on principles of solidarity, self-management, affordability, and inclusiveness — the ART Programme bridges this gap. Participants are exposed to working models of mutual insurance that are socially sustainable, financially viable, and deeply relevant to the contexts of the communities they serve.

A hallmark of the ART Programme is the active engagement of People Mutuals, the community-owned and managed mutual insurance organizations promoted by DHAN Foundation.

Genesis of the Programme
The ART Programme draws upon more than 25 years of DHAN Foundation’s pioneering work in building community institutions and mutual insurance systems. Since the late 1990s, DHAN has facilitated the development of 176 autonomous federations — the People Mutuals — across India. These federations manage insurance services for health, life, agriculture, livestock, and natural calamities, entirely owned, operated, and governed by the community members themselves.
Recognizing the need for a structured platform for capacity building, knowledge sharing, and innovation, The DHAN Academy launched the ART Programme in 2008.Since its inception, the programme has evolved into a prestigious international learning forum, with People Mutuals at its core, offering real-world insights and models of community-driven insurance solutions.
